The boat is skippered by Charles Francis Adams III, the first amateur to win the America’s Cup race. Long after the victory, Adams’ nephew, George Homans, writes, “Here was a new kind of excellence for an Adams, since to the earlier members of the family, competitive sport may well have seemed frivolous, even British.”
